Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and often abbreviated to LA, is the second largest city in the US (behind New York City) with a population of 3,887,779 according to the 2012 census. The metropolitan area of Los Angeles has nearly 18 million inhabitants and also has the largest car density in the world. Since there are few public transports, motorists often spend hours on the road during peak periods. Allow extra time to get around if you're driving, regardless of how long someone says it takes to get somewhere. A lot of Angelenos use the Waze app to find shortcuts through the city. Uber and Lyft are always options if you don't want to do the driving yourself.
LA is so big that it is difficult to see it all in one stay. If you do come to visit, West Hollywood is a good central location to stay at. The Sofitel and The London are a few trendy hotels that sit right in between downtown LA and the beach. Concierges here can also help you get reservations around the city that are otherwise difficult to get.
Los Angeles has a number of entertainment venues for opera, theatre, and concerts. A few of the most popular venues are the LA Opera, the Los Angeles Theatre, The Fonda Theatre, Memorial Coliseum, and the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. There are also lots of options for entertainment besides these including Disneyland, Marina Del Ray, Santa Catalina Island, the Bay of San Pedro and many more.
Los Angeles has one of the biggest industrial, financial, and commercial centers in the United States. If LA were a country by itself, the economy of it would be larger than that of Switzerland, Sweden, and Saudi Arabia.
Los Angeles has some beautiful parks, such as Griffith Park (with zoo), open air theater, Griffith Planetarium and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum (1988, history of the American West). The oldest buildings in the city belongs to the Old Mississippi church built by Spanish Franciscans (1814-1822) and the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Park which is the historic center of the city and was founded in 1781.
The weather is warm and sunny almost every day but it can get chilly soon after sunset. The key is to wear layers that are easy to put on and take off. Also, be warned that when it rains in LA, it pours!
People in LA tend to live healthy lifestyles. Many restaurants offer menus that include light and healthy options that are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, organic, and even raw. There are countless juice bars and food trucks with inexpensive options around town.
