Salt Lake City is named after the Great Salt Lake, of which it rests on the shores of. The Great Salt Lake is so packed with salt that it's far more buoyant than usual. In fact, the lake is actually two to five times saltier than the ocean! For most people, you can simply stretch out and you'll practically float above the water.
There's also the nearby snow-capped Wasatch Mountain Range. Many of the local mountains make for great skiing opportunities. In fact, there are seven world-class ski resorts all within a short drive of the city. While you might think that Salt Lake City is a dry area, there is actually a considerable amount of moisture. Combined with density, this creates fantastic snow, which makes Salt Lake City an excellent skiing destination.
Salt Lake City isn't just about winter sports, however. With over 900 acres of public parks, a lot of people love to hit up the great outdoors when the weather is nice. Come the summer months and many of these public parks will air family-friendly movies on giant screens. Have you ever watched a movie from the mountains? You can head to the ski resort "Snowbird" during the warmer months. There, you can watch free movies on the mountain with up to a hundred other people.
Salt Lake City is set up on a very simple to navigate grid system. Thus, if you just want to take a stroll around town, it's not hard to get where you're going. If you happen to get lost or turned around, you can often use the grid system to get back on track. The grid also makes driving relatively easy.
If you are visiting the city or new to town, be warned: many businesses close come Sunday. This should be no surprise, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints is headquartered in Salt Lake City. Roughly half of SLC's residents are active members of the church. Speaking of churches, there's a ten-acre church called Temple Square, which serves as the official headquarters of the Mormon Church.
There are a lot of cool attributes about Salt Lake City, quite literally. CNN named Salt Lake City the least-stressed out city in the United States back in 2014. So yeah, people are often quite chill. Also, Advocate named SLC the "Gayest City in the USA" back in 2012.
The city has enjoyed an unemployment rate consistently below average as well. This helps explain why Salt Lake City regularly ranks among America's fastest growing cities.
